SCAFFOLDING EXPERTISE ENFOLDS THE OLD ACADEMY BUILDING
The Old Academy Building (Akatemiatalo) is named after
Finland’s first university, Turun Akatemia, which first took the
building into use in 1817. Now the building is being updated
to modern requirements with interior renovations and a new
roof.
“The renovation will be completed in 2017, and then the
Turku Court of Appeal, which leases the building, will be able
to return to the revamped facility,” says Hietamäki.
The framework of the building is a wooden structure that
absolutely may not get wet.“Telinekataja’s weather protection
systems are an essential element in terms of the protection
and preservation of the building,” Hietamäki emphasises.
“The system extends over the roof using up to 20-metre-
long girders that are attached to scaffolding built around the
outside of the building and in the inner yards,” explains
ISMO
IHAMÄKI
, Production Manager at Telinekataja.
The in-place assembly of such larger girders requires
great skill. The weather protection system covers one third
of the roof and is moved for each phase of the roof work.
“Co-operation with Telinekataja has gone very smoothly.
They are flexible and their work is top-notch,” praises
JUHA
VIHINIEMI
, Supervisor at A-insinöörit.
A valuable cultural building in Turku, namely the nearly 200-year-old Old Academy Building
(Akatemiatalo in Finnish), is being renovated with respect for its heritage. The project is challenging,
because it calls for a weather protection system that doesn’t even slightly brush against the roof
of the enormous building. “Telinekataja offered us an innovative solution,” tells TARJA HIETAMÄKI,
Construction Project Manager at Senate Properties, the proprietor of the Old Academy Building.
