An overall floor area of 7,500 m² to renovate and 4,800 m² to construct is covered by a weather protection
system totalling 3,000 m². The renovation and extension of the Turku City Theatre is a major investment
for the City of Turku and a highly demanding project for the contractors. Modern facilities for future theatre
experiences are being built safely under cover, with scaffolding and weather protection provided by Telinekataja.
“This is definitely the most extensive project in decades for
the City of Turku, and it’s important also because the building
itself is an essential element of our cityscape. Built in 1962,
it no longer offered sufficient space and technical solutions
to meet today’s requirements for the city theatre, so a
decision was made to modernise the building, with respect
for the old,” explains
ANNE ANTOLA
, Contracting Engineer
at the City of Turku.
“We chose, again, Telinekataja as the supplier of
scaffolding and weather protection. They are a reliable
partner and we can trust that everything proceeds smoothly,”
says
VOITTO NIEMI
, Project Manager at Skanska, the
construction company responsible for the overall project.
Weather protection for all seasons
Antola and Niemi emphasise the significant role of weather
protection. The old structures and existing materials must be
protected against humidity. Telinekataja’s weather protection
systems provide a proper work environment in all seasons, no
matter if it’s raining, sleeting or snowing.
“Simultaneous demolition and renovation of the old and
construction of the new pose extra challenges in terms of
scaffolding. Our task is to support the smooth progress of the
work,” explains
JARI SAARINEN
, Supervisor at Telinekataja.
Autumn 2017 is the time for celebration. The Turku City
Theatre can return from its temporary location in Logomo
on the other side of the city back to the riverbank of
Aurajoki. The audience can then witness the return to the
stage of Aleksis Kivi’s Seven Brothers, which amassed record
attendances in the 1970s.
