“We wanted a partner that was able to build stable scaffolding
structures without damaging the castle’s own plastering and
structure. Telinekataja provided both practical solutions and
functional planning assistance,” explains

Within the walls of Olavinlinna, history has witnessed
battles, grand celebrations and opera performances. The
castle, which celebrates its 530 year anniversary this year,
remains a popular destination in the town of Savonlinna;
one whose historical spirit could not endure were it not for
continuous reparations and maintenance.
The roof project required the input of several different
experts from Senate Properties, which manages real estate
and projects, the National Board of Antiquities as well as
subcontractors.

The work to repair the damaged roof of Olavinlinna Castle’s
bell tower called for a wide range of scaffolding expertise.
A glimpse into the past
and support for the future
“The project called for careful planning and risk evaluations,
as well as a demanding focus on occupational safety,” tells
RIKU PELKONEN
, Production Manager for the Telinekataja
divisions in Central and Eastern Finland.
“The scaffolding materials needed to be transported via
the flattest section of the island, and, in addition to their
normal protective gear, the installers were required to wear
lifejackets. We anchored the scaffolding carefully through
openings in the bell tower that were earlier intended for
defence and light sources,” Pelkonen describes.
Both Senate Properties and Telinekataja praise the
successful collaboration of all the parties involved in the
project.
“Telinekataja met all our expectations, and worked
flexibly and quickly. The scaffolding enabled the roofers and
researchers to get their work done. More information was
gained about Olavinlinna Castle’s history, and the project
ensured that the castle will remain in good condition for
future generations to enjoy as well,” Kinnunen sums up.
Kurkistus menneisyyteen, tukea tulevalle
Normaalisti telineet ankkuroidaan porattavien kiinnikkeiden
avulla suoraan rakennuksen seinään. Olavinlinnan seiniin te-
lineet eivät saaneet koskea, poraamisesta puhumattakaan.
Yhteistyössä ongelmaan keksittiin kätevä ratkaisu, jossa
käytettiin hyväksi tornin puolustuskäytäviin tehtyjä aukkoja.
– Aukoista on ennen ammuttu vihollisia, ja ne ovat tuo-
neet valoa torniin. Projektissa ne toimivat telineiden tukiauk-
koina, joiden kautta ankkurointi tehtiin varovasti ja suun-
nitelmallisesti rakenteita suojaavaa solumuovia käyttäen,
Pelkonen kuvailee.
Sekä Senaatti-kiinteistöjen että Telinekatajan puolelta
kehutaan kaikkien projektin osapuolten onnistunutta yhteis-
työtä ja hyvää vuorovaikutusta.
– Telinekataja vastasi odotuksiimme. He pystyivät muok-
kaamaan suunnitelmia tarvittaessa ja reagoivat nopeasti li-
säpyyntöihin. Pysyimme aikataulussa: telineiden pystytyksen
jälkeen katolle pääsivät kiipeämään sekä katon korjaajat että
tutkijat, jotka ottivat talteen linnan alkuperäistä rappausta.
Olavinlinnan kiinnostavasta historiasta saatiin lisää tietoa, ja
urakalla edistettiin linnan säilymistä hyvässä kunnossa myös
tuleville sukupolville, Kinnunen kiteyttää.
